Nuchal Scan for Down’s Syndrome

Nuchal Scan test is offered to pregnant women at Bumps Pregnancy Care, a One Stop Clinics Healthcare Company. Expectant mothers with significant risks of having a baby affected by Down’s syndrome or any of the other syndromes, is advised to have this test.

To screen or not to screen for Down’s is the question. Currently, most babies affected by Down’s syndrome are borne to women with known minimal risks. So the question is: “should all pregnant women have a nuchal test for Down’s syndrome?”

The question is difficult to answer because of the ethical, economic and risk factors involved. To make it easier for mothers to decide, the Nuchal scan test is offered because it carries minimal risk of miscarriage of otherwise a normal pregnancy.

The nuchal test is able to detect the following: Down’s Syndrome, Patau’s Syndrome, or Turner’s Syndrome.

The posterior portion of the neck area is evaluated in the Nuchal scan test. The skin in this region is measured to assess the amount of edema there is. In affected babies with Down’s syndrome or any of the above conditions, the skin on the back of the baby’s neck, swells due to increased water retention. It is thought this swelling is due to poor or defective lymph drainage in this particular area.

Where the skin is deemed to be thickened, the scan measurement is combined with the mother’s blood rest result is the calculation of risk.

The final result if provided by the software that has been verified by scientific studies over many years and after thousands of tests.

The combined test is accurate to a high degree, over 97% for Down’s syndrome. There is NO risk to the baby, as opposed to the alternative invasive tests, including amniocentesis and chorionic villus biopsy.

The National Health Service provides screening for Down’s syndrome ONLY. We, at Bumps Pregnancy Care provide a comprehensive test providing information for the diagnosis of other syndromes, including Patau and Edward’s syndromes.
